Katrien Benhalima

Katrien Benhalima MD PhD, is a clinical scientist and endocrinologist at the department of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Gasthuisberg Leuven, Belgium. She is also assistant Professor at the University KU Leuven. She has a senior clinical research fellowship from the Flemish Research Council. Her research is focused on gestational diabetes (such as screening strategies, prediction of GDM, long-term postpartum risk and prevention strategies for mothers and offspring) and new technologies for the management of type 1 diabetes in pregnancy. She was the PI of the Belgian Diabetes in Pregnancy Study, evaluating different screening strategies for GDM. She is the PI of the ongoing CRISTAL study, a large RCT evaluating the 780 closed-loop system in pregnancy. She is the secretary of the European ‘Diabetic Pregnancy Study Group’ (DPSG). She won several awards such as the rising star researcher award by Primary Care Diabetes Europe, the Belgium Novo Nordisk award for Diabetology, and in 2021 also The Belgian Endocrine Society award and the DPSG Joseph Hoet Research Award.
